The University of Nairobi on Tuesday, 31st March, 2026, hosted the High Commissioner of India to Kenya, Dr. Adarsh Swaika, who paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson.

The meeting marked an important step in strengthening the long-standing relationship between Kenya and India, and in deepening collaboration between the University and the Indian High Commission.

During the meeting, both leaders agreed on the need to move Kenya–India relations forward by focusing on innovation, research, and the digital economy.

Prof. Jesang highlighted the University’s role in bringing people together to discuss ideas and find solutions to shared challenges. She noted that the University is committed to supporting research and partnerships that benefit both countries.

Dr. Swaika emphasized the importance of working together more closely, including implementing existing agreements and creating new opportunities for collaboration. He also expressed interest in supporting the modernization of University staff housing to attract more international scholars.

As part of the visit, the High Commissioner and the Vice-Chancellor officially opened the India Corner at the Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library. The Indian Embassy donated 100 books to support learning about Indian culture.

They also paid tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue, reflecting the shared history and strong cultural ties between Kenya and India.

The visit set the stage for the inaugural Nairobi–New Delhi Dialogue held at the Chandaria Auditorium under the theme “Reimagining Kenya–India Relations.”

The Dialogue brought together students, scholars, diplomats, and experts from several universities, including the Multimedia University of Kenya, Strathmore University, Daystar University, and the Technical University of Kenya.

Participants discussed key areas such as:

  • Trade and economic cooperation
  • Digital innovation
  • Education and research partnerships
  • Cultural and people-to-people connections

There was strong agreement that Kenya and India should build a future-focused partnership that supports young people, innovation, and sustainable development.

The Dialogue ended with a shared commitment to continue working together and to make the Nairobi–New Delhi Dialogue an annual event.

The day’s activities showed that Kenya–India relations are growing stronger and are now focused on building a shared future through knowledge, innovation, and collaboration.
