The University of Nairobi has reaffirmed its status as Kenya’s premier higher education institution, securing 1st place nationally, 8th in Africa, and 805th globally in the 2025 EduRank assessment. This marks a significant jump from its 2024 global rank of 824. EduRank evaluated 14,131 universities worldwide (1,104 African, 63 Kenyan) based three key factors: Research outputNon-academic prominence, and Alumni influence

Research Excellence

Analyzing 115 million publications and 3 billion citations, EduRank highlighted UoN’s robust research impact. The university produced 21,723 publications with 364,314 citations. It ranked in the top 50% globally across 129 research topics, with Environmental Science, Public Health, and Agricultural Economics in the top 10%—fields critical to Kenya’s development. Strengths in Chemistry, Engineering, and Computer Science further underscore its role in advancing Africa’s growth.

Non-Academic Prominence: Bridging Academia and Society

UoN’s non-academic prominence, ranked 730th globally, reflects its ability to translate knowledge into real-world impact. Its strategic location in Nairobi facilitates collaborations with government, industry, and international organizations, enabling contributions to policy formulation, innovation, and public health. With collaborative initiatives spanning over 60 international institutions, UoN enriches its academic landscape with diverse perspectives and cross-border dialogue. Moreover, initiatives like the UoN Career Services and the Green Jobs Centre drive entrepreneurship, while its active role in Kenya’s COVID-19 response underscores its vital societal relevance.

The university’s 106 notable alumni, including Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai and President William Ruto, underscore its role as a cradle of leadership. The Edurank report ranked other Kenyan higher education institutions as follows: Kenyatta University (2nd), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (3rd), Strathmore University, and Moi University.
